Measuring Trail Distance

When I was young my dad taught me how to measure a trail on a map using a piece of string. You could then straighten out the string and measure it on the scale at the bottom of the map. It worked but the string wouldn’t keep the shape of the trail easily. Always looking for a better way, I started using a piece of thin bendable wire, which did the same thing but more easily maintained the shape of the trail, yet could still be straightened and measured.
